Link Building

What makes a good backlink?

Good backlinks make sense before you calculate any metric. They connect a relevant page to a useful destination in a context that helps the reader.

Relevance

The linking page, surrounding text and destination should have a coherent relationship. A relevant link can help users continue the task they are already performing.

Editorial choice

A link is stronger conceptually when the publisher chose it because it improves the content, not because a tool, payment or reciprocal requirement forced it into the page.

Page quality

Look at the page itself: does it receive real attention, have useful content, remain indexed, and belong to a credible site? Domain-level metrics cannot answer all of those questions.

Placement and anchors

A contextual link inside relevant content often communicates more than a boilerplate footer link. Natural anchor text should describe the destination without repetitive optimization.

Destination quality

The linked page should satisfy the reason it was cited. If the destination is thin, misleading or unrelated, the backlink is not rescuing the user experience.
