Signals worth investigating
- Large bursts of irrelevant links from unrelated sites.
- Repeated commercial anchors across many domains.
- Auto-generated pages with little purpose beyond outbound links.
- Networks of pages sharing highly similar templates/content.
- Links you purchased or created specifically to pass ranking credit.
A bad-looking link is not automatically a crisis
The web contains scraper sites, spam and random links that site owners never created. Do not assume every strange backlink requires action.
Start with provenance
Ask how the link appeared. If your own campaign created it, you have much stronger evidence about intent than you do for random links discovered in a crawler.
Use Google's policy as the baseline
Google’s link-spam definition is about links created primarily to manipulate rankings. That is more useful than treating any third-party toxicity score as an official Google signal.
