The basic structure
| Layer | Typical destination | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Main site/page | Closest links to the target. |
| Tier 2 | Tier 1 pages | Support or discovery for Tier 1. |
| Tier 3 | Tier 2 pages | Further scale / secondary support. |
Why people use tiers
Tiering is often used to isolate lower-quality automation from a primary domain, diversify where links point, and try to strengthen or accelerate discovery of intermediate properties.
What tiering cannot guarantee
A multi-hop structure does not turn manipulative links into compliant links. Google’s definition focuses on the purpose and nature of the link scheme, not whether the link is one or two hops away from the target.
Operational challenge
As tiers expand, tracking becomes harder. You need to know which properties still exist, which links remain live, what anchors were used and whether the intermediate pages themselves have any value.
